Princess Tabu
The Traditional Tongan Folk Story
"Princess Tabu" is the story of two sisters, Princess Ta
and Princess Bu, who were separated upon the death of their
Mother when they were both very young children.
Raised by falcons, the sisters lived apart for ten years until
it became too much to bear. Princess Ta soared to the heavens
in search of her beloved sister. As she flew higher and higher
she became more desperate in her search and tears filled her
eyes as she flew so fast that her entire vision was blurred.
At this exact point in time her sister, Princess Bu was flying,
searching for Ta and likewise flying blind in a frenzied search
for her special sister.
Then there was a mighty crash of thunder and an enormous bolt
of lightning was seen, as the sisters flew straight into each
other and fell from the sky. The entwined two fell into each
other and fell from the sky. The entwined two fell an incredible
distance until they splashed down into the deep sea. When they
finally came up for air, they were no longer two sisters but
one beautiful girl. The sisters who had been separated all their
lives had become one.
As if guided by a Divine force, the girl walked naked from the
ocean and through the palm jungle until she came upon her original
village. She entered the village and spoke for the first time in a
voice so heavenly that all the birds and animals stopped to listen
to her. She pronounced with compassion and love
"I am the Princess Tabu, I'll take care of you".
